Once activated, the watch sends out an amplitude-modulated signal pulse lasting 0.75 seconds, repeating every 2.25 seconds. Every 60 seconds, it automatically broadcasts the Morse code letter "B" (for Breitling) so search teams can instantly identify the unique signal type. Under optimal conditions (flat terrain or open ocean), the signal can be detected across a 90 to 100-nautical-mile radius by search aircraft flying at 20,000 feet. On flat ground, rescue vehicles can pick up the signal from roughly 15 to 20 miles away. 

The transmitter has a power output of 30 milliwatts. Driven by its own separate, dedicated power cell inside the case, it will continuously broadcast for 24 to 48 hours, depending heavily on the ambient temperature (extreme cold drains batteries faster).

Whilst this feature is undoubtedly designed specifically for use by Pilots, Adventurer's etc, and is very unlikely to be required during normal day-to-day Civilian activities, it is a very cool and unique function and makes the Breitling Emergency the iconic watch it is.

The watch is powered by the Breitling Caliber 73, a COSC-certified thermo-compensated SuperQuartz chronograph movement that provides a three-register Chronograph featuring separate 12-hour, 30 minute and 60 second sub-dials. There is also a date function. The watch is further equipped with a Bi-directional rotating stainless steel bezel with a 60-minute scale, a scratch resistant and glare-proof Sapphire crystal and a water resistance of 100m.

This example, dating to 2003 is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition showing minimal signs of wear and with all functions operating correctly including the emergency beacon and supplied beacon tester. 

The watch is supplied on a Breitling brown calf leather strap with yellow lining and white contrast stitching that shows minimal signs of wear, with a Breitling stainless steel deployant clasp.
