The Rolex Day-Date Ref. 18038 is an iconic 36mm luxury dress watch crafted from solid 18k yellow gold. Colloquially known as the "President", after the bracelet model it came on, this transitional vintage model features a fluted bezel, sapphire crystal, the single quick-set Calibre 3055 movement, and the afore mentioned signature semi-circle three-piece link President bracelet. Subsequent models have seen an increase in case size, but the earlier 36mm cases, at only 12.6mm thick, are seen by many as the more balanced and elegant versions. The watch has a brushed 18k yellow gold case, with a polished 18k yellow gold fluted bezel, a two-dot screw-down crown, and correct ref:8385 President bracelet with hollow centre and side links. It has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with the classic Rolex Cyclops lens over the date.
The watch is powered by the automatic Rolex Caliber 3055 running at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) with a 45-hour power reserve and single quick-set date function. The date complication comprises the full day name displayed at 12 o’clock and the date window at 3 o'clock.
This reference bridges the gap between older acrylic crystal models (like the ref. 1803) and later dual quick-set movements, introducing modern reliability while retaining vintage charm.
This example is in very good cosmetic condition showing some signs of wear commensurate with its age and light use. The full-length bracelet shows some stretch but should be classified as good. The white dial has small deconstructive Roman Numeral hour markers with tritium lume plots and hands. The watch is offered as a set comprising of correct Rolex leather 'buckle box', Seal and Swimpruf hang tags, card wallet, Rolex Oyster book, Rolex day-date box, calendar card, translation booklet, Rolex cleaning cloth and the all important original punched warranty papers dated November 1987.
