The Rolex Day-Date 18038 is an iconic design that was manufactured between 1977 and 1988. It is considered a transitional reference that modernised the series by introducing a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a "single quickset" movement.
The Rolex Day-Date 18038 is defined by its 36mm Oyster case and fluted bezel, manufactured exclusively using precious metals, in this case 18ct yellow gold. The watch is powered by Rolex' automatic calibre 3055 movement with a beat rate of 28,800 vph for a smoother sweep of the seconds hand. The watch incorporates a "Twin-lock"screw-down crown, affording it a water resistance rating of 100m, and has a scratch-resistant Sapphire Crystal with the iconic Cyclops lens over the date.
This reference introduced several technical upgrades over its predecessor, the ref. 1803, notably:
- Single Quickset: The Calibre 3055 movement allows the date to be set independently by turning the crown, though the day of the week must still be set by advancing the hands.
- Flat Dial: Unlike the "pie-pan" dials of earlier models, the 18038 features a flat dial, which gives it a larger, more modern appearance.
- Language Options: The day display at 12 o’clock was available in up to 25 different languages during this production run.
- Bracelet: Typically fitted with the 18ct gold President bracelet featuring semi-circular three-piece links and a concealed Crown-clasp.
This particular example (dating to 1985) is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, and also has a Factory set diamond dot dial. The watch comes with inner and outer Rolex box set and Rolex service paperwork dated 2007.
